“I want this one.” Leah was seated, legs stretched out, in the middle of the dog pen surrounded by a litter of Rottweiler puppies. I was having fun watching the chaos of the little black and brown balls of fur tumbling over one another to try and grab her attention. One was nipping gently at the hand she was leaning back on while another was entangled in her long hair biting at the strands that brushed against its nose. She raised her free hand and pointed to the only puppy that hadn’t joined in the fun.
“Why him specifically? I think they all look the same… Why not take the one that’s been climbing into your lap this whole time?” I had brought her here to the dog breeder to choose one lucky pup for her birthday present. She had been a long time friend and had always wanted a dog but just never solidified that decision. Leah was perfect to be a dog owner. Responsible, caring, and most importantly loving. Being her best friend and roommate for years, I finally decided to make it happen.
“No. I want this one over here.”  Again she pointed at the fuzzy puppy off to the side who now had stood up on all fours, clearly thinking he was 10 times his actual size.
“Seriously? Out of all of the ones being ridiculously cute and cuddly you want the one who keeps snarling and barking at us?”
Leah’s face quickly turned and her eyes locked on mine. With her left eyebrow raised she simply said, “He’s feisty. He’s the one.”
“C’mon Lee… he’s asking for trouble and we haven’t even brought him home yet.” I got up from my seat, careful not to step on the puppies that ran toward my ankles, and approached the little tyke. He looked up at me and with the fiercest mean mug he could muster up, gave the cutest bark you could ever hear. That’s it. He had won me over somehow.
Leah felt my change of heart and was about to say something as she stood up. I quickly cut her off and blamed my decision on her. “Don’t look at me like that. You know I can’t say no to that face.”
The smile on her face was priceless.
